Certification of a management system is a way of ensuring that an organisation has implemented and applied a management system for aspects related to its activities, products and services in accordance with its policy and the requirements of the relevant international management system standard. Certification is independent evidence that an organisation's management system complies with specified requirements, is capable of consistently achieving its stated policy and objectives and is implemented effectively.
Certification activities are discrete activities from the review of the application to the completion of certification. They also include audits of an organisation's management system. Audits are a systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining audit evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria (e.g. applicable management system standard, certification requirements, etc.) have been met.
The audit programme for the initial certification cycle shall include an initial audit in two stages, surveillance audits in the first and second years and a certification renewal audit after the third year before the certification expires.
Additionally, special audits may be carried out, e.g. at the request of a certified client to extend the scope of certification or following complaints or grievances. All audits are carried out by competent auditors and technical experts who have been assessed and approved by the certification body.
INCERT also implements procedures to ensure that auditors perform their duties impartially and objectively and maintain professional confidentiality. The full conditions under which certification is carried out are available in our Certification Rules.
